Abercrombie and Fitch Clothing was started in 1892

It’s this kind of loyalty from customers that has allowed the brand to expand so rapidly after changing its image in thelate 80s.A lot has to do with the name of this brand, but it’s also about the clothes.Dean is currently a student at Queen Mary University, locatedin London, and is pursuing a barrister’s degree.
Riam, who was born without a forearm, has utilized a prosthetic appendage for as long asshe can remember.REUHL is just another example long line of conceptsrolled out by established chains over the last few years that were either closed or abandoned.abercrombie and fitch Clothing was started in 1892 by David T.abercrombie and fitch as an outfitter for those who were heading into the wilderness. The brand began to falter in the mid 19th century, but began a turnaround when they were bought by The Limited in 1988.There are a lot of people out there who make this their brand, buying very little from other clothing companies. abercrombie and fitch
This history adds a little something extra to the, clothes in this brand. Quality is something that never goes out of style and it shows in these clothes and accessories.A better question might be where you can’t find this clothing brand. Both online and in the physical world, there are a lot of different places to pick up clothes or accessories that carry this name and the heritage that comes along with it.

Abercrombie & Fitch employees are required to wear jeans

abercrombie and fitch has never been a stranger to discrimination suits; one was recently settled in the US for discrimination during the hiring process in that they would allegedly only hire “young and beautiful” men and women to work in their stores.
I am not one of those sue-crazy citizens. I think that a lot of the lawsuits nowadays are setups. A lot of people abuse the legal system and look for loopholes to sue over practically everything. I have a family member quite like that and it drives me up the frigging wall. Yet, I hope Riam gets every penny. I hope she triple-sues. I hope after the suit goes through, she receives her requested money and additional funds for pain and suffering. The embarrassment at her treatment by A&F must be immense.
Riam Dean has a prosthetic arm that attaches at the elbow, and she typically wears a sweater to cover the prosthetic. While abercrombie and fitch employees are required to wear jeans and a polo shirt, she was given permission to wear a white cardigan while working on the floor. But only a few days after she started work, the store was paid a visit by the “visual team.” This group’s purpose is to sure the shop and its staff look up to code. One of the members of the team demanded she take off the cardigan, but she insisted she had permission to wear it. Nevertheless, she was asked by management to continue her employment in the stockroom, far out of the public eye. Management claimed that she “violated the ‘Look Policy,” which is an imperative part of working for such a prestigious clothing outlet. As if she could help the fact that she is, unfortunately, missing an arm. Totally her fault, I suppose. The nerve. Pssh.
Riam sucked it up and commenced her stockroom duties, normally reserved for the “underlings” (i.e., ethnic minorities) of abercrombie and fitch “society” and received a telephone call at home a few days later, asking if she would continue on board with the company’s stockroom until their winter uniforms came in, which consisted of long-sleeved tops. She quit on the spot.
Riam, who was born without a forearm, has utilized a prosthetic appendage for as long as she can remember. However, she never let her physical handicap become just that - a handicap. Dean is currently a student at Queen Mary University, located in London, and is pursuing a barrister’s degree.

Abercrombie and Fitch in 2008

Abercrombie and Fitch proclaimed their innocence of the disability discrimination charges which carry heavier penalties both by law and bad public relations. Their lawyer issued a press release saying, “We are pleased that the Tribunal found that A&F did not discriminate against Ms. Dean on grounds of her disability and also found that A&F provided Ms. Dean with the accommodation she requested… We were happy to employ Ms. Dean, and we have always been, and will continue to be, supportive of the rights of disabled individuals.”
Dean was hired by abercrombie and fitch in 2008 but relegated to the back room where she would not be seen by customers. She was born with part of her arm missing and wears a prosthesis. While Dean offered to cover the prosthesis with a sweater, the employer’s treatment amounted to wrongful dismissal to Dean for not having the sexy A&F look.
The tribunal heard testimony that “on July 4, Maria Barbera, one of her managers, told her: “I can’t have you on the shop floor as you are breaking the look policy, immediately go to the stockroom.” Telegraph.co.uk
Dean, then a law student and now an articling student at law, filed a complaint with the central London employment tribunal.A British employment tribunal has found abercrombie and fitchwrongfully dismissed Riam Dean, a student who was employed at the sexy Saville Row store then dismissed ostensibly because she didn’t fit the “look” of the store.Riam Dean, although photogenic, has a prosthetic arm and contended she was dismissed because of her disability.
The tribunal awarded Dean about $15,000 US ($9,000 British pounds) for loss of employment, wrongful dismissal, harassment and hurt feelings. The tribunal stopped short of making the award for disability discrimination.
Riam Dean awarded damages
abercrombie and fitch are developing a reputation for discrimination which should harm their sales.
They lost a $45 million lawsuit in the US on discrimination against minorities. Disability discrimination cases are still new and not well understood by the courts. The fact A&F has now lost cases on both sides of the Atlantic is turning heads in the retail fashion industry.Dean, speaking through her mother after the ruling, appears pleased with the results.Miss Dean’s mother, May, said her daughter was “very, very pleased” at the outcome. She said: “It has been a long legal battle against abercrombie and fitch but all her efforts have finally paid off.” Telegraph.co.uk

Plans Further Price Cuts After 1Q Loss- Abercrombi

Addressing the investors at a conference call, abercrombie and fitch Chairman and CEO Mike Jeffries talked about the company’s “miss” with regard to anticipate some key women’s fashion styles. Jefferies said: “Clearly we missed dresses and clearly we weren't as aggressive with print and pattern as we should have been. We were wrong. I was wrong, and we're correcting as we go forward.”
Talking about the consumers’ reluctance to spend on “premium brands” amid recession, Jefferies said that despite the company taking pride in the quality of its brands and its unique store experience, and not on price; the kind of price-consciousness that has of late been dictating the shoppers’ moves is something that he had not witnessed before.
Reporting a deeper-than-anticipated first-quarter loss, abercrombie and fitch Co. (ANF) – apparel retailer, which had though reduced its prices during the quarter, but had resisted as drastic price-cuts as the other retailers - intends reviewing its earlier stand with regard to price reductions.
As a result of abercrombie and fitch’s staunch defense of a fundamentally non-promotional approach, it posted a $26.8 million first-quarter loss, in comparison to its year-before income of $62.1 million. The retailer’s gross margin plunged 350 basis points to 63.3 percent, chiefly due to discounting.
The company is now “actively planning for meaningful reductions,” particularly at its Hollister and children’s stores, and ongoing clearance events.abercrombie and fitch

smelling like a bagel bakery

The ONLY shorts my husband will wear are from abercrombie and fitch. (y'know...the cargo/khaki shorts that seem to be on every guy all summer long). Today he went to the mall all by himself, which is a big deal in itself, but that's another story not worth telling.

He got home and showed me his purchases, then handed the shorts to me so that I can take out the drawstrings that he hates. The scent of their stupid cologne blind-sided me. Do you know that they actually pump that shit out of misters in the ceiling all day long? Gggguuuuhhhh-ross.
I can't imagine working there. I mean, when the store first opened here, I liked the smell. Now it's just abused. I think working there would match right up with working at McDonald's, and smelling like grease. Or working at Tim Horton's and smelling like a bagel bakery.

Now my cat is playing in the bag. I probably won't be able to cuddle with him tonight because he's going to be a stinkercrombie and fitch cat soon.abercrombie and fitch

Abercrombie & Fitch in the Unreal World

So beyond the titillation, there’s something else behind abercrombie and fitch’s success—namely, the human need for fantasy. From the daily grind of work or school to the tedium of commutes, bills, and boring families, life can serve up much that begs for escapism.
Not so long ago, this need for escapism came wrapped in high art. Passages of D.H. Lawrence are hotter than anything abercrombie and fitch’s ever cooked up, but no one reads about Lady Chatterley when a more easily understood Carson Daly’s on the tube. Wagner’s searing duets are more passionate and sensual than Sisqo moaning to let him see that thong. But in today’s pre-professional college world, accounting books are shoving aside great literature in pursuit of practicality. Music history is frequently a “gut” class to be slept through, the great works ignored in favor of more accessible tunes on the radio. Sure, you could spend days drifting off with the restless journeys of Jack Keroac. But when hours of economics problem sets, soccer practice, dorm committee meetings, and job interviews are calling, it’s easier just to glance at the A&F quarterly version of the road trip.
Which begs the question—how does it work?
The critics have a ready answer—a culture-wide race to the bottom, with several “bottoms” thrown in along the way. Sex sells. There’s something to this complaint. Virtue tends to lose to vice, particularly among those who view the vice as compellingly forbidden. To buy the A&F catalog, I visited a store filled with 12-year-old girls daring each other to buy short shorts and giggling about the spring break signs saying “Share your towel. Oil your neighbor. Remember her name.” Anonymous spring break flings are one thing for college students to be fantasizing about. They’re another thing entirely for the preteens who flock to A&F stores. The catalog is certainly part of the constant teenage titillation today’s culture provides, from the booty-shaking videos on MTV’s Total Request Live, to The Thong Song’s lyrics, to movies that sneak by with PG-13 ratings.
But unlike those examples, you do have to be 18 to buy the A&F catalog, and none of the articles in the Spring 2008 issue are more risque than articles in Cosmo or Maxim, which carry no such age restrictions.
Desiring a different world

So now, mimicking Milton’s image of Adam and Eve discovering each other in the Garden, we have two half-dressed abercrombie and fitch models staring at each other through the leaves. Our escapist art now comes in a clothing catalog, and instead of inspiring the mind to deep thoughts, it inspires the viewer to find his Visa card.
Perhaps someday, Abercrombie’s collegiate clientele will rediscover higher-brow ways of drawing the mind away from the drudgery of daily life. But until then, shirtless men will frolic on abercrombie and fitch’s soccer field, eyelet-lace wearing girls will stare longingly off camera, and an eager public will lap up the catalog while A&F’s executives smile all the way to the bank.

A law apprentice with a prosthetic arm has won her accouterment for blameworthy adjournment adjoin U.S. accouterment banker abercrombie and fitch afterwards she was ordered to plan in the stockroom. The woman, Riam Dean (pictured), had declared that she was removed from a London branch’s sales attic because the cardigan she wore to awning her missing larboard acquaint abandoned Abercrombie’s austere dress code. Thoughts on Abercrombie & Fitch's attitude to disability

Naff US accouterment alternation
abercrombie and fitch is beneath analysis afterwards a aloft agent tells a attorneys about the bigotry she faced due to her prosthetic arm.

Law apprentice Riam Dean, is gluttonous advantage from the banker for her adventures beneath A&F's "oppressive regime".

Dean was built-in after a larboard forearm, and has beat a prosthetic limb aback she was a baby.

The facts of the case are acutely simple: Dean alleges that she told her employer about her disability, whereupon they agreed she could abrasion a cardigan to awning the affiliation amid her prostehtic acquaint and high arm.

However, she was anon told that, because of the cardigan, she was in aperture of the companies' "look policy".

Dean contends that the A&F arch appointment appropriate she break in the stockroom "until the winter compatible arrives".

While there has been some altercation over elements of her claim, including allegations that her affirmation that A&F administration had again asked her to abolish her prosthetic arm was false, the axial affair of bigotry over her artful abhorrence with the firm's abreast arbitrary attraction with manifestations of concrete accomplishment remains.

A&F's "look policy" states that advisers "represent abercrombie and fitch with natural, archetypal American actualization constant with the company's brand" and "look abundant while announcement individuality".

Clearly the individuality envisaged by the A&F arch appointment does not extend to the achievability that not anybody - be it agents or customer - will accommodate to the sculptured, wholesome, aryan-master-race amalgamation that abercrombie and fitch purveys to the an image-conscious US and latterly, British boyish market.

I can assure you that this biographer is not kept alive at night, flicking through A&F aback catalogues, abracadabra conspiracies out of the marvellous similiarities amid said catalogues and the Hitler Youth's propaganda. However, admitting the added circuitous issued abject out in the tribunal, the actuality charcoal that A&F's valorisation of artful accomplishment sets the bar for moral bankruptcy, in the following of accumulated profit, and defence of bartering image.

After all, they apparently couldn't accept that a sales abettor with a prosthetic arm would not in actuality imperil the management's christmas bonuses. Their amusing conditioning and acclimatization appear such a shallow, commercialised bazaar meant that those anxious with profit-strategies couldn't appreciate the actuality that in an accustomed world, humans are built-in with disabilities, and it is not adequate to avoid them, or to affectation apathetic boldness for disability-discrimination acts, by employing anyone and again demography pains to ensure your barter don't apperceive that, shock, horror, up-market A&F employs somebody with a prosthetic arm.

To be sure, abercrombie and fitch aren't the alone ones at accountability in a actualization industry whose antipathy for reality, and conception of an artful dystopia, is accurate in circadian accounts of ascent eating-disorders, objectification of concrete actualization etc.

However, if the attorneys takes a close band adjoin A&F in this case, again that would forward a bulletin out to retailers that, no amount the amusing cachet of their clientele, no fasion characterization is aloft the appropriate to plan in a discrimination-free atmosphere, after the concrete and cerebral detriments of affliction getting circuitous and exploited by image-conscious head-office bureaucrats.

In fact, admitting the actualization industry could do itself a huge PR addition by alteration its attitudes to the disabled workforce, any such attempts would for the accountable approaching be apparent as the PR achievement it would accordingly be, rather than a longed-for sea change in attitudes.

To Abercrombie and Fitch Outlet Store

The abercrombie and fitch outlet store solves the problem for those feeling the impact of the economy or for people who want to look their best but simply can’t afford to pay off the rack prices that they may find in high end retail stores. That’s what outlet stores are all about.
For people who are looking for affordable clothing that is still at the height of fashion, the abercrombie and fitch outlet store is their one stop resource. Brand names like this one have a well earned reputation. People wear them because the name itself tells others that they have good taste and only want the best. In this Declining economy however, wanting to buy the best and being able or afford the best may be two entirely different things.
So, how can the abercrombie and fitch outlet store afford to sell clothing at the kind of prices you find at outlet stores? Simple. The clothes you find at the abercrombie and fitch outlet stores are put their when their season is over. In other words, abercrombie and fitch has come out with their new line and they send the line from the past season to the outlet store.

For some reason a lot of people are under the impression that clothing sold at outlet stores has a lower quality than clothing sold in retail stores. This simply isn’t true. The clothes you find in outlet stores are the very same clothes you find in any retail store. They are simply a season behind. They are made by the same manufacturer and were likely sold in the very retail store that people think is better than the outlet store.

So, if your friends want to spend twice the money that you do on your wardrobe, then don’t educate them about outlet stores. Let them spend their money as they will. It doesn’t mean you have to waste your money by buying clothing in retail stores instead of outlet stores. Why do that when you can have a great wardrobe and still have cash in your pocket for other things, like going out on the weekends to show off your high quality fashion sense.

Really, the smart thing to do is to go shopping at an outlet store to not only save money, but to get clothing for the whole family. Let everyone else spend their money where they want, but if you like keeping money in your pocket, then an outlet store is the perfect place for you.

Not too cool for a lawsuit Abercrombie & Fitch dinged for discrimination

And speaking of school, lots of people on the other side of the argument inferred that my assessment of A&F was inspired by my being either severely unpopular in high school, overweight, a minority, or a self-loathing Caucasian. What all of them agreed on was that my post utterly lacked objectivity.

Dean, who has a prosthetic arm, had sued the company after her store manager allegedly forced her to wear a cardigan to cover the prosthesis, then demoted her from a sales position on the floor to a stockroom job.A London tribunal today ruled that Riam Dean, 22, suffered unlawful harassment when she was an employee at abercrombie and fitch. She was awarded $13,256.81, or £8,000 pounds.

When Dean's case first came to light, I wrote a post for Walletpop suggesting that perhaps the young woman's complaint should mark the end of the road for A&F, a brand that has experienced more than its fair share of discrimination controversies -- and one that's now also battling a grave downturn in sales.abercrombie and fitch

The proposal -- which I freely admit was a radical one -- was met with heated responses on both sides. I learned that very definitely many people are sick and tired of A&F's near-constant, winking prejudices, as well as its sometimes-shoddy product quality and its always too-cool-for-school salespeople.abercrombie and fitch

Public Relations gaffe for Abercrombie and Fitch

Apart from the legal niceties of how they discriminated against Ms. Dean, it is obvious abercrombie and fitch did wrong her to the tune of $15,000. Is it chic to discriminate?

“Marketing experts described the case as “one of the biggest gaffes” by a fashion retailer, and warned it could damage the brand.
Mark Borkowski, a leading brand and celebrity publicist, said: “This is probably one of the biggest gaffes by a fashion retailer – it is a disgrace and a PR nightmare.
“Jason Nisse, a PR executive from the firm Fishburn Hedges, added: “abercrombie and fitchshould not confuse creating an aspirational image with being elitist.
“It is potentially very damaging to them and they will need to work hard to restore some depth to their brand if they are to maintain their position in today’s competitive environment.”abercrombie and fitch
“They need to immediately reassure customers that this is a brand for everyone, not for just some ideal that they have of what is a beautiful person, or they will rightly become the poster boys for everything that is wrong with the fashion industry.” Telegraph.co,uk abercrombie and fitch

Abercrombie & Fitch, supplier of pricy casualwear to City bankers' teenage children, today said like-for-like sales had crashed 30% in the second quar

It has been hit hard by the steep recession in the US, where consumers have been keeping their wallets firmly shut.
However, the company which runs a flagship store in the West End and a handful of Hollister-branded shopping mall stores here, said it wanted to continue its international expansion.
abercrombie and fitch Co. (ANF), a leading international specialty retailer, reported disappointing second quarter results with a net loss of $26.7 million or -30 cents per share compared to a net income of $77.8 million or 87 cents per share in the year-earlier quarter.
The year-over-year decline in results was primarily due to the continued economic downturn plaguing the industry that has resulted in reduced consumer discretionary income and a cut in non-essential spending.
Overall net sales of the company during the quarter decreased 23% to $648.5 million from $845.8 million in the year-ago quarter. Total company direct-to-consumer net sales decreased 13% year-over-year to $48.7 million, while overall comparable store sales decreased 30%.
Gross profit rate during the quarter decreased 360 basis points year-over-year due to a higher markdown rate. abercrombie and fitch was able to reduce its stores and distribution expense (as a percentage of sales) through savings in store payroll, and reduction in direct-to-consumer and other variable expenses. The marketing, general and administrative expenses also decreased during the quarter from $109.0 million to $88.7 million due to savings related to employee compensation and benefits, and cut in travel and outside services.
However, the rate of sales decline of the company was much higher than the reduction in expenses. Furthermore, abercrombie and fitch witnessed an increase in rents, depreciation and lease termination costs related to the exit of RUEHL branded stores.
During the quarter, the management approved the closure of 29 RUEHL branded stores and associated direct-to-consumer operations. abercrombie and fitch incurred $23.6 million of pre-tax charges during the quarter to exit RUEHL, along with an impairment charge of $0.8 million. The company expects to complete the closure by the end of fiscal 2009.
At quarter end, abercrombie and fitchhad $366.5 million of cash and cash equivalents along with outstanding debt and letters of credit of $79.6 million. The company repaid $100 million of US dollar-denominated outstanding debt, and obtained approximately $37 million in foreign currency denominated borrowings to fund its international lease and capital expenditures.
During the quarter, the company opened its first Epic Hollister flagship store in New York, two Hollister mall-based stores in the UK, and one abercrombie and fitch store in the US. abercrombie and fitchmulls opening nine mall-based stores in fiscal 2009 in the US, which includes two Abercrombie stores, four Hollister stores, one Gilly Hicks store, and two outlet stores. Internationally, the company intends to open 10 mall-based stores in the current fiscal year, including one Abercrombie store in Canada, one Hollister store each in Germany and Italy, and seven Hollister stores in the UK.
Abercrombie has reduced its earlier capital expenditures projection for fiscal 2009 from $200 million to $185 million, due to lower-than-expected construction costs and the reduction and deferment of non-essential projects related to existing stores.

Abercrombie and Fitch: The biggest brand loser of the recession

While numerous financial websites (including this one) have searched for the brands best positioned to survive the recession, less attention has been given to the opposite end of the spectrum.
Even as companies like Walmart and Target are using the economic downturn to retrench and grow, others are finding themselves caught in failed business models that threaten their survival. Unwilling or unable to adapt with the times, they seem likely to become the recession's dinosaurs: once-magnificent beasts destroyed by an ever-changing environment.
The best candidate for extinction right now may well be abercrombie and fitch(ANF). The retailer, once the sixth-most popular brand for teenagers, spent much of the early 2000s engaged in massive expansion, adding sister stores Hollister, Ruehl, and Gilly Hicks. As the recession has advanced, it has watched its revenues plummet. In the second quarter of 2009, sales dropped by 30 percent, as it lost $26.7 million.
abercrombie and fitch's biggest problem is its unwillingness to compromise on price. Over the last year, amid dropping sales and anemic revenues, high-end retailers from Saks to Coach to Barneys have offered big discounts, developed cheaper brand lines, and opened outlet stores. Faced with consumers demanding more quality for lower prices, they have tried to find ways to maintain their brand identity while dropping their costs.
Not abercrombie and fitch. Claiming that sales and discounts would "cheapen" the brand, the chain has maintained its high prices, even in the face of plummeting sales. While this has been terrible for revenues, it has been great for brand identification: where abercrombie and fitch and Aeoropostale were once almost identical, they are now clearly differentiated. Aeropostale -- which has dropped prices -- is the store with customers in it.
Given the history of the brand, Aabercrombie and fitche's stand is hard to understand. After all, in its earlier incarnation as an expedition outfitter, it was the clothier of choice for Amelia Earhart, Ernest Hemingway, Teddy Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy. Following declining fortunes, bankruptcy, buyouts, and rebrandings, it found itself transformed into an ersatz-preppie mall brand, characterized by loud music, atmospheric photos, and half-naked would-be models hawking generic hoodies and ripped jeans.
Thousands of consumers have learned that recessions are a great time to reassess needs and reconsider spending habits. If abercrombie and fitch fails to do the same, it is likely to find itself transformed into a cautionary tale of a store that was left by the wayside when it declined to change with the times.
